Community Ownership for Health and Racial Equity

Across the U.S., neighborhoods are asking a defining question: who owns our future?

As housing costs skyrocket, displacement rises, and wealth gaps widen, communities are searching for ways to stay rooted economically, socially, and culturally. One answer is gaining momentum…community ownership.

Community ownership of land and real estate allows residents to take collective control of the places they live and work. It’s a powerful approach to advancing racial and health equity - keeping homes affordable, strengthening local economies, and ensuring that investment benefits those who have long been left out of traditional systems.

The Community Ownership for Health and Racial Equity Project, based at the University of Miami’s Community & Educational Well-Being Research Center (CEW-RC), is leading new national research and case studies to better understand and scale this work. In partnership with local and national leaders, the project explores what it takes to make community ownership viable and replicable.

At this time in our history, when structural inequities and community displacement threaten the health and stability communities all across the country, this national project brings together those working to change system rules, build durable partnerships, and craft new narratives about ownership and belonging in community.

Community ownership is not just about real estate, it turns out. It’s about power, health, and self-determination. Together, we can reimagine what it means to own our collective future.

To kick off this national effort, we invite you to join the launch webinar, Owning Our Future: New Tools for Community Ownership of Real Estate, hosted by the University of Miami’s CEW-RC. This virtual event will bring together national experts, local leaders, and community ownership practitioners to explore the tools, strategies, and stories shaping this growing movement.

Participants of the launch webinar will get a first look at the project’s research framework, hear from community innovators across the country, and learn how collective ownership can drive health and racial equity in neighborhoods nationwide.
